Sonic.net & CEO Dane Jasper Fought Secret WikiLeaks Court Order – “Dane vs Goliath”

ISP Sonic.net & Dane Jasper fought secret WikiLeaks court order! In a “Dane vs. Goliath” twist of the WikiLeaks saga, the Wall Street journal today reported that California-based ISP Sonic.net, led by CEO Dane Jasper, has put up an expensive fight against a secret US court order aimed at the contacts of Jacob Appelbaum. The order sought to require the ISP Sonic.net to turn over the emails and contacts of WikiLeaks volunteer and noted internet technologist Jacob Appelbaum. While unsuccessful in their legal response, Sonic.net CEO Dane Jasper commented that their costly investment in protecting the privacy of Sonic.net customers was “the right thing to do.”

As WikiLeaks and Bradley Manning story unfolds, there are a tremendous number of smaller stories emerging which highlight important issues, raise key legal questions and will also find a place in the memory of society, culture and law. These powerful stories may in fact be just as interesting to Wikileaks movie and film fans as Julian Assange and WikiLeaks. The include politicians such as Birgitta Jonsdottir and the outspoken creatives including WikiLeaks Truck Driver Clark Stoeckley and “wikivisionist” Michael Parenti (aka @exiledsurfer). And now, as companies ranging from Twitter and Google to PayPal appear to be relatively compliant with regards to WikiLeaks-related court orders, we are beginning to see smaller organizations such as Sonic.net and their CEO Dane Jasper mount vigorous defenses against legal tactics they feel impede the rights of internet users and citizens. While they may be unsuccessful in the short term against such mammoth foes, these principles-based stands may help the courts and policy-makers address the overarching, longer term questions related to consumer internet rights and freedoms.

Since the early days of WikiLeaks, the Julian Assange Autobiography has been much anticipated. Who is Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks? What was the impetus behind WikiLeaks in his own words? The book would allow Assange tell the story of WikiLeaks and his own journey from his direct point of view with little outside or third party interpretation. Al Jazeera has replaced director Wadah Khanfar after WikiLeaks cables revealed that news coverage of the war in Iraq may have been edited or toned down due to pressure from the United States. This change in leadership takes place during a period of time in which Al Jazeera is being scrutinized closely for its “varied” coverage of the Arab Spring which envelops the Middle East. Al Jazeera, which is controlled by the country of Qatar, has named Sheik Ahmad bin Jasem bin Muhammad Al-Thani as Khanfar’s successor. Al-Thani is a businessman and member of the Qatar royal family.

Crowdsourcing WikiLeaks: The Movie? With WikiLeaks moving to "crowdsource" the grass roots mining of cablegate documents (See #WLfind) the team at WikiLeaks-Movie.com is wondering whether or not crowdsourcing methods will be used to craft or fund a WikiLeaks movie, film or documentary? As anyone who tracks the WikiLeaks phenomenon knows there are many movies and films on the topic of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks in development. Leading players in the movie business such as Alex Gibney, Marc Shmuger, Rowan Joffe, Charles Ferguson, Mark Boal & Megan Ellison are all involved in the topic in some way or another. With such a crowded field some might wonder if there is room for another. However, crowdsourcing the development or funding of a WikiLeaks movie or film could open up a new avenue on this topic, decentralize the movie-making process, democratize the gathering of perspectives and allow new grassroots dimensions and viewpoints to emerge. Perhaps new "crowdsourced" fundraising channels will open up for grassroots organizations such as WikiLeaks or others involved in the "transparency movement.

WikiLeaks, in concert with bold crowdsourcing tactics, has published thousands of cables in what is being called the “largest mass release” yet of US State Department Cables by the WikiLeaks organization founded by Julian Assange. This action was taken just after the development of a new Twitter account @WLFind and hashtag #WLfind to stimulate the crowdsourcing and mining of “gems” of data from the cables. Reuters journalist Mark Hosenball cites “A person in contact with Assange’s inner circle told Reuters the rationale behind the mass release of documents was dismay among WikiLeaks activists that media organizations had lost interest in publishing stories based on the material.”

Gibney, the founder of Jigsaw Productions, has created a WikiLeaks movie and film page for their “Untitled WikiLeaks Project” which is in production. As you may recall, Gibney “The Dishevelled Columbo” has been on a world-wide quest to better understand and document the WikiLeaks and Julian Assange story. Earl Anthony Wayne will serve as the new Ambassador to Mexico, taking the post vacated since the resignation of Carlos Pascual. Pascual resigned earlier this year after WikiLeaks cables disclosed his critique of Mexican authorities and President Felipe Calderón. Earl Anthony Wayne most recently served as deputy ambassador to Afghanistan. Wayne, a California native, earned a Political Science degree in Political Science from Berkeley as well as Master’s degrees in Political Science and Public Administration from Stanford, Princeton and Harvard.

PayPal, the financial services company which has blocked transactions to WikiLeaks is today facing a substantial and growing protest called #OpPayPal with supporters of WikiLeaks, Anonymous and LulzSec being asked to close their PayPal accounts.

ArtificialEyes.tv, the website operated by artist and “Wikivisionary” Michael Parenti, appears to have been blocked and censored on at least one U.S. government computer network. While WikiLeaks-Movie.com is unable to verify this directly, we have learned from Parenti that his site has been “blocked in U.S. government networks” including the United States Air Force, an action which he states has been “confirmed by many sources.”

WikiLeaks Movie and documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney was recently interviewed by Karl Quinn of The Sydney Morning Herald. Gibney, who has two films showing at the Melbourne International Film Festival, is on a fascinating trek to understand and convey the “globe girdling” WikiLeaks story. This trek has taken Gibney to Iceland for interviews with Birgitta Jonsdottir, to Magnetic Island, Oklahoma USA and many other locales. Alex Gibney clearly recognizes the hilarity and challenge of his effort as it takes place simultaneously to other WikiLeaks movie and film projects. Branding himself ”a more dishevelled Columbo, shuffling along trying to understand what’s going on,” it is this dogged, detective-like approach to film making that may ensure his WikiLeaks documentary film project stands out in the eyes of history.

“To BCC, or not to BCC, that is the question.” In today’s Guardian, former WikiLeaks member James Ball traces the roots of Bradley Manning’s detention to an early email error made by Julian Assange relating to the CC/BCC fields. This seemingly small error, Ball explains, sparked a series of events leading to Bradley Manning’s detention and a host of other implications. This is a very interesting exercise in “connecting the dots” by Ball to explain his point that anonymity and source protection involve much more then technology, encryption and cyber security. To get our own heads around this series of linkages we have attempted to summarize.

U.S. Senator John McCain Calls for “Temporary Cyber Security and Electronic Intelligence Leaks” Committee

United States Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has called on Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to support the development of a “Temporary Select Committee on Cyber Security and Electronic Intelligence Leaks in the United States Senate” to overcome competing jurisdictions and bureaucracy associated with currently existing committees and groups. In his letter, Senator McCain evoked quoted current US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta “The next Pearl Harbor we confront could very well be a cyber attack…” McCain’s “Call to Committee” drew a quick response from Senators Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins who called his proposal “… a real mistake and a waste of time…” which would dismantle supposed progress that has been made in recent years by other committees, task forces and other groups.
