“Crowdsourcing” The WikiLeaks Film, Movie or Documentary?

Crowdsourcing WikiLeaks: The Movie? With WikiLeaks moving to "crowdsource" the grass roots mining of cablegate documents (See #WLfind) the team at WikiLeaks-Movie.com is wondering whether or not crowdsourcing methods will be used to craft or fund a WikiLeaks movie, film or documentary? As anyone who tracks the WikiLeaks phenomenon knows there are many movies and films on the topic of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks in development. Leading players in the movie business such as Alex Gibney, Marc Shmuger, Rowan Joffe, Charles Ferguson, Mark Boal & Megan Ellison are all involved in the topic in some way or another. With such a crowded field some might wonder if there is room for another. However, crowdsourcing the development or funding of a WikiLeaks movie or film could open up a new avenue on this topic, decentralize the movie-making process, democratize the gathering of perspectives and allow new grassroots dimensions and viewpoints to emerge. Perhaps new "crowdsourced" fundraising channels will open up for grassroots organizations such as WikiLeaks or others involved in the "transparency movement.

WikiLeaks Film & Movie – Alex Gibney & Jigsaw Productions Update

The WikiLeaks film & movie by Director and filmmaker Alex Gibney is coming closer to fruition. Gibney, the founder of Jigsaw Productions, has created a WikiLeaks movie and film page for their “Untitled WikiLeaks Project” which is in production. As you may recall, Gibney “The Dishevelled Columbo” has been on a world-wide quest to better understand and document the WikiLeaks and Julian Assange story. WikiLeaks-Movie.com has received first-hand updates on Gibney’s interviews, including one by Icelandic leader Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Icelandic Parliament Member.

Rowan Joffe To Write HBO’s “Wikileaks Movie”. The HBO & BBC Wikileaks Movie team has tapped Rowan Joffe to write the script and screenplay and added a deep roster of executive producers to complement the Oscar-Winning Director Charles Ferguson. Joffe has an impressive background, previously directing “Brighton Rock (2010)” and writing for George Clooney independent film “The American” as well as “28 Weeks Later.” Joffe will work in collaboration with Ferguson and a talented group of Executive Producers including Josh Maurer, Alixandre Witlin, David Stern, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall.

Marc Shmuger is the former co-chairman of Universal Pictures and a key Wikileaks Documentary Filmmaker and co-producer working with director Alex Gibney. The Wikileaks movie and film projects, the really successful, educational and entertaining ones, must be led and crafted by first rate producers and directors. With this in mind, the Wikileaks film will be the first project of Shmuger’s new Universal-based production company, Global Produce, which will be headquartered in Santa Monica and will have a first-look deal with Universal.

Marc Shmuger and Oscar-winner documentary director Alex Gibney are well underway with this project, interviewing key players in the Wikileaks story including Birgitta Jonsdottir and others. Recently, Marc Shmuger described this Wikileaks collaboration and project as his “Labor of Love” which is good news for movie fans and people interested in bringing the Wikileaks and Julian Assange story to life on film in as authentic and entertaining fashion as possible.

Charles Ferguson, Wikileaks HBO Movie Producer

Charles Ferguson, who is at the helm of the HBO Wikileaks Movie project, is the next Director to be highlighted at Wikileaks-Movie.com. We have highlighted Alex Gibney, who is working with Universal on a Wikileaks Documentary film. Although information is scarce at this point, Gibney has indicated to 24 Frames that his film, produced in collaboration with former Universal co-Chairman Mark Shmuger, will highlight the role(s) of “less heralded” persons such as Bradley Manning and Birgitta Jonsdottir. But for this post we’ll focus on Ferguson, who will no-doubt be working just as hard to bring the Wikileaks story to light for HBO audiences. As evidenced by his track-record in film, technology and other arenas he seems to care a great deal about making sense of complexity for audiences and consumers without “dumbing down” the topic matter. He is an accomplished documentary film director and producer who has achieved a great deal in his career and continues to tackle tough, important and interesting projects. As reported previously, Universal will fund Gibney’s Wikileaks film project. A lot of actors are surely up to the task but we think one of the best choices to play Julian Assange is Russell Crowe. Why would Russell Crowe be a good Wikileaks Movie Actor?
