Crowdsourcing WikiLeaks: The Movie? With WikiLeaks moving to "crowdsource" the grass roots mining of cablegate documents (See #WLfind) the team at WikiLeaks-Movie.com is wondering whether or not crowdsourcing methods will be used to craft or fund a WikiLeaks movie, film or documentary? As anyone who tracks the WikiLeaks phenomenon knows there are many movies and films on the topic of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks in development. Leading players in the movie business such as Alex Gibney, Marc Shmuger, Rowan Joffe, Charles Ferguson, Mark Boal & Megan Ellison are all involved in the topic in some way or another. With such a crowded field some might wonder if there is room for another. However, crowdsourcing the development or funding of a WikiLeaks movie or film could open up a new avenue on this topic, decentralize the movie-making process, democratize the gathering of perspectives and allow new grassroots dimensions and viewpoints to emerge. Perhaps new "crowdsourced" fundraising channels will open up for grassroots organizations such as WikiLeaks or others involved in the "transparency movement.

Rowan Joffe To Write HBO’s “Wikileaks Movie”. The HBO & BBC Wikileaks Movie team has tapped Rowan Joffe to write the script and screenplay and added a deep roster of executive producers to complement the Oscar-Winning Director Charles Ferguson. Joffe has an impressive background, previously directing “Brighton Rock (2010)” and writing for George Clooney independent film “The American” as well as “28 Weeks Later.” Joffe will work in collaboration with Ferguson and a talented group of Executive Producers including Josh Maurer, Alixandre Witlin, David Stern, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall.

For the Wikileaks-Movie.com audience, Raffi Khatchadourian is a must-read author and Wikileaks authority whose work as many of you know has been optioned by HBO for a movie project directed by Charles Ferguson. And today we introduce you to his most recent piece “MANNING, ASSANGE, AND THE ESPIONAGE ACT” which is available at the New Yorker. First, some background and context. In June 2010, Raffi Khatchadourian penned an article for the New Yorker titled NO SECRETS – Julian Assange’s mission for total transparency which provided an in-depth view into the world of Wikileaks and Julian Assange. At the time, there were very few articles that brought the reader into the day-to-day workings of this organization during its quest for “total transparency” and game changing impact in the world of journalism and diplomacy. Since this time this article by Raffi Khatchadourian has been optioned by Hollywood as part of an HBO movie and film project directed by Charles Ferguson. Raffi has also tackled other projects, including writing a piece on Iraq War Crimes titled The Kill Company – Did a colonel’s fiery rhetoric set the conditions for a massacre?

Charles Ferguson, who is at the helm of the HBO Wikileaks Movie project, is the next Director to be highlighted at Wikileaks-Movie.com. We have highlighted Alex Gibney, who is working with Universal on a Wikileaks Documentary film. Although information is scarce at this point, Gibney has indicated to 24 Frames that his film, produced in collaboration with former Universal co-Chairman Mark Shmuger, will highlight the role(s) of “less heralded” persons such as Bradley Manning and Birgitta Jonsdottir. But for this post we’ll focus on Ferguson, who will no-doubt be working just as hard to bring the Wikileaks story to light for HBO audiences. As evidenced by his track-record in film, technology and other arenas he seems to care a great deal about making sense of complexity for audiences and consumers without “dumbing down” the topic matter. Will HBO choose Russell Crowe for its Wikileaks Movie? Emile Hirsch? Who will be the Wikileaks Movie Actors? The question on everyone’s mind is: who will play Julian Assange in the upcoming HBO Wikileaks Movie & Film directed by Charles Ferguson? A lot of actors are surely up to the task but we think one of the best choices to play Julian Assange is Russell Crowe. Why would Russell Crowe be a good Wikileaks Movie Actor? The answer is simple: Crowe is the kind of major star who unlike many other actors can drum up a lot of interest for this important film. Furthermore, Crowe is an Australian just like Julian Assange. Finally, Russell Crowe is only seven years older than Assange, making him a good age for the role.

Ferguson has two widely respected documentary films under his belt, the Academy Award-Winning Inside Job (2010) and No End In Sight: The American Occupation of Iraq (2007). This news from Variety comes amidst sensational news and impacts related to the Wikileaks Gitmo Files dump which has some commentators such as Bill Reilly calling for treason charges against Assange and Wikileaks.
