“Crowdsourcing” The WikiLeaks Film, Movie or Documentary?

Crowdsourcing WikiLeaks: The Movie? With WikiLeaks moving to "crowdsource" the grass roots mining of cablegate documents (See #WLfind) the team at WikiLeaks-Movie.com is wondering whether or not crowdsourcing methods will be used to craft or fund a WikiLeaks movie, film or documentary? As anyone who tracks the WikiLeaks phenomenon knows there are many movies and films on the topic of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks in development. Leading players in the movie business such as Alex Gibney, Marc Shmuger, Rowan Joffe, Charles Ferguson, Mark Boal & Megan Ellison are all involved in the topic in some way or another. With such a crowded field some might wonder if there is room for another. However, crowdsourcing the development or funding of a WikiLeaks movie or film could open up a new avenue on this topic, decentralize the movie-making process, democratize the gathering of perspectives and allow new grassroots dimensions and viewpoints to emerge. Perhaps new "crowdsourced" fundraising channels will open up for grassroots organizations such as WikiLeaks or others involved in the "transparency movement.

In a scenario worthy of “The Spy Who Shagged Me,” WikiLeaks cables from September 2007 reveal that Chinese Minister of Finance Jin Renquing resigned because he’d been trapped in a romantic ‘honeypot’ with a Taiwanese intelligence operative. In August 2007, when Chinese officials announced announced that Jin Renqing was stepping down, their claim was that “personal reasons” caused his resignation. However according classified US diplomatic cables recently released by WikiLeaks, the Jin Renqing was actually involved romantically with a woman also linked to other prominent Chinese officials. It is alleged that this woman was an operative and “a promiscuous socialite” for the Taiwanese Intelligence services.

What is the role of Wikileaks in Yemen and the “Arab Spring?” In Yemen, political revolt is in full swing. President Ali Abdullah Saleh has left the country for Saudi Arabia as the “Arab Spring” uprising causes bloodshed and a transformation in power structures. The causes for this watershed event are many, but many wonder “What has been the role of Wikileaks?” At the recent Hay Festival, Julian Assange remarked that Wikileaks had ”played a significant role” but acknowledged that many factors are at play, not simply the influence of Wikileaks cable releases. Wikileaks-Movie.com ALERT! Irish Independent News Releases “The Ireland Cables” with Wikileaks

The Irish Independent has released the Wikileaks Ireland Cables, 1,900 classified cables from the American Embassy in Ireland. As a continuation of Wikileaks’ approach to develop national partnerships with key News Agencies (e.g. Israel: Haaretz, India: The Hindu), today the Irish Independent has begun its own Wikileaks journey.

As the paper reports, “TODAY this newspaper carries the first installment of a flood of information obtained through the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, founded by Julian Assange. It is not too much to call this exclusive series a major event in Irish journalism.

It consists of vast numbers of messages sent to the State Department in Washington (and passed on from there to other US government agencies) by diplomats in the American embassy in Dublin and the American consulate in Belfast.”

Wikileaks Movie Scene: Artic Oil & Resource War?…Potential Scene for Wikileaks Movie & Film?

The Wikileaks Artic Oil and Resource cables highlight a major global issue while setting the stage for some awesome potential Wikileaks movie and film scenes. Movie and film fans are already imagining the movie scenes which will highlight key impacts or milestones emerging from the Wikileaks and Julian Assange story. Diplomatic cables have been released by Wikileaks which bring a key international issue to light: the competition for Artic oil, gas and natural resources by countries including the US, China, Canada and Russia. As polar ice melts due to global warming, massive reserves of natural resources are being exposed, resources which fossil fuel dependent industrialized countries need. The Wikileaks cables bring new detail to this issue relating to resource extraction and the opening of new, strategic shipping routes. Make no mistake that major countries will go to great lengths to assert first rights to this resource base as economic, military and political power is tied to ownership of oil and natural resources. Given this fact, it will be interesting to watch how the Wikileaks movie and film projects will incorporate this topic of the competition for Artic Oil, which in many respects reminds our team at Wikileaks-Movie.com of a suspenseful, espionage-filled and action-packed James Bond movie.

Goodbye Quantico. Hello Fort Leavenworth. Bradley Manning, the Wikileaks player suspected of providing classified data to Julian Assange and company, is on the move. U.S. officials will soon move Manning from his cell in Quantico to a U.S. Army prison and detention center in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This comes as big news as Manning’s treatment and prison conditions have ignited a firestorm of protest from supporters, Manning’s parents, constitutional legal scholars and international political leaders from all corners of the world. For the growing community of Wikileaks Movie and Film fans this is an important milestone on Bradley Manning’s journey, a journey which will no doubt be chronicled and highlighted on the big screen as a key contributor to Cablegate, Wikileaks and Julian Assange. For an excellent background read Greg Mitchell, has written a book on Bradley Manning. This is very good and informative read. Be sure to read the Appendix as well.
