“Crowdsourcing” The WikiLeaks Film, Movie or Documentary?

Crowdsourcing WikiLeaks: The Movie? With WikiLeaks moving to "crowdsource" the grass roots mining of cablegate documents (See #WLfind) the team at WikiLeaks-Movie.com is wondering whether or not crowdsourcing methods will be used to craft or fund a WikiLeaks movie, film or documentary? As anyone who tracks the WikiLeaks phenomenon knows there are many movies and films on the topic of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks in development. Leading players in the movie business such as Alex Gibney, Marc Shmuger, Rowan Joffe, Charles Ferguson, Mark Boal & Megan Ellison are all involved in the topic in some way or another. With such a crowded field some might wonder if there is room for another. However, crowdsourcing the development or funding of a WikiLeaks movie or film could open up a new avenue on this topic, decentralize the movie-making process, democratize the gathering of perspectives and allow new grassroots dimensions and viewpoints to emerge. Perhaps new "crowdsourced" fundraising channels will open up for grassroots organizations such as WikiLeaks or others involved in the "transparency movement.

WikiLeaks, Mass Cable Dump & Crowdsourcing to Mine State Department Cable “Gems”

WikiLeaks, in concert with bold crowdsourcing tactics, has published thousands of cables in what is being called the “largest mass release” yet of US State Department Cables by the WikiLeaks organization founded by Julian Assange. This action was taken just after the development of a new Twitter account @WLFind and hashtag #WLfind to stimulate the crowdsourcing and mining of “gems” of data from the cables. Reuters journalist Mark Hosenball cites “A person in contact with Assange’s inner circle told Reuters the rationale behind the mass release of documents was dismay among WikiLeaks activists that media organizations had lost interest in publishing stories based on the material.”

Twitter Wikileaks Case Matters, but PornWikiLeaks and Assange Dance Video Spark Interest

Wikileaks Movie fans…the Twitter Wikileaks case is important! While PornWikileaks takes center stage along with the Julian Assange dance video (aka DiscoLeaks) it is important to highlight the ongoing news in the “Twitter Three” Wikileaks & Twitter Case. This is the case that ensures Twitter’s role in the Wikileaks Movie. Recall the Virginia court case mandating that Twitter hand over data on the “Twitter Three.” Well, as usual, an appeal has been filed, but a powerful appeal supported via amicus brief by a cluster of noted computer and security professionals who are concerned about the legal implications of this Wikileaks / Twitter case. These computer scientists and citizens include Steven Bellovin, Bruce Schneier, Susan Landau and others. They work at and represent organizations such as The Radcliff Institute, SRI International and Harvard. Wikileaks is not only having tremendous impact on the field of journalism but is also raising implications for the legal system and its intersection with emerging technology. This sort of impact and information is important for Wikileaks Movie and film buffs to follow.

The “Twitter Three,” Judge Theresa Buchanan and the Wikileaks Social Network

MMore Wikileaks Movie material as Judge Theresa Buchanan requires Twitter to share the Wikileaks social networks of the “Twitter Three” Jacob Appelbaum, Birgitta Jonsdottir and Rop Gonggrijp. These associates of Julian Assange may have substantial social networks linking them to other key members of the Wikileaks community. And now Theresa Buchanan has required Twitter to give up this information to investigators who seek the communications of the “Twitter Three” s to make a case and file charges against Julian Assange for his vast Wikileaks disclosures of Cablegate diplomatic cables. These cables were allegedly provided to Wikileaks by US Army Private Bradley Manning. However the exact relationship and communications between Bradley Manning, Julian Assange and other Wikileaks members remains vague. Data provided by San Francisco-based Twitter may help investigators clarify this aspect of the Wikileaks story and legal case and will no doubt bring more information to producers of the Wikileaks Movie who are looking to document and portray this key piece of the puzzle. This legal judgment, along with others, will have an impact on the trial(s) of Julian Assange and could potentially have ripple effects on the social network habits of government officials, activists and intellectuals down the road. In discussing the Wikileaks Movie there are frequent comparisons to The Social Network. This legal case involving Twitter, and by precedent other sites such as Facebook, makes the connection between The Social Network and Wikileaks Movie (s) more tangible.
