WikiLeaks Movie & Documentary Film Update- Alex Gibney, The “Dishevelled Columbo” on a Quest for Understanding the WikiLeaks Story

"In Memoriam Peter Falk" Columbo Painting by Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo

WikiLeaks Movie and documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney was recently interviewed by Karl Quinn of The Sydney Morning Herald. Gibney, who has two films showing at the Melbourne International Film Festival, is on a fascinating trek to understand and convey the “globe girdling” WikiLeaks story. This trek has taken Gibney to Iceland for interviews with Birgitta Jonsdottir, to Magnetic Island, Oklahoma USA and many other locales.

Alex Gibney clearly recognizes the hilarity and challenge of his effort as it takes place simultaneously to other WikiLeaks movie and film projects. Branding himself a more dishevelled Columbo, shuffling along trying to understand what’s going on,” it is this dogged, detective-like approach to film making that may ensure his WikiLeaks documentary film project stands out in the eyes of history.

“Abuse of Power, Corruption All Grist to Filmmaker’s Mill” Article on Alex Gibney by The Sydney Morning Herald

But there’s another purpose for Gibney’s visit: he’s hard at work on his next project, a documentary about WikiLeaks, and since arriving he’s been on the trail of Julian Assange.

“It takes you to some interesting places,” he says of the WikiLeaks story. ”I’ve been to Iceland, to Magnetic Island, where Julian Assange and his mother spent some time, here in Melbourne, the UK, Sweden, the flat plains of Oklahoma. It’s a pretty globe-girdling story.”

It’s a rich subject, and one that has made for a very crowded field, with a multitude of WikiLeaks documentaries and features in the works (and in some cases completed).

Gibney, though, is unperturbed.

”It’s a game-changing story,” he says. ”There are times when I think maybe I should make a film about all the people who are making films about Julian Assange, but I’m digging in.”
