WikiLeaks Film & Movie – Alex Gibney & Jigsaw Productions Update

Casino Jack Screening in New York City

WikiLeaks Film Director Alex Gibney, Jigsaw Productions

The WikiLeaks film & movie by Director and filmmaker Alex Gibney is coming closer to fruition. Gibney, the founder of Jigsaw Productions, has created a WikiLeaks movie and film page for their “Untitled WikiLeaks Project” which is  in production. As you may recall, Gibney “The Dishevelled Columbo” has been on a world-wide quest to better understand and document the WikiLeaks and Julian Assange story. WikiLeaks-Movie.com has received first-hand updates on Gibney’s interviews, including one by Icelandic leader Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Icelandic Parliament Member. Additionally, we find this to be an excellent interview with Gibney, who describes his filmmaking relationship with Julian Assange and attending the 40th birthday of Assange.

Interestingly (or not) Alex Gibney and his team chose to use a select image from a WikiLeaks cable authorized by Ambassador James B. Smith from the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia. This cable focuses on discussions between Smith and Ambassador, Pakistani Ambassador Umar Khan Alisherzai. In these discussions the two discussed US Military operations in Pakistan’s tribal areas, the bilateral relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and other topics. Was this specific cable randomly selected or will it be woven into Gibney’s WikiLeaks Film and Movie in some sort of purposeful way? We’ll see!

In 2010, WikiLeaks and its sources used the power of the Internet to usher in what was for some, a new era of transparency, and for others, the beginnings of a new information war. The film will explore the story of how this enormous trove of classified US data was leaked, the impact the documents have had on international events, and what we can expect from the future of digital activism.

Excerpt from Alex Gibney Interview by Gothamist – “Magic Trip” Director Alex Gibney Talks LSD, Neal Cassady, Ken Kesey, Obama”

Question: Are there any other countercultural figures or moments in history you’d like to make films about?

Alex Gibney: I don’t know. Maybe. I’m doing one that’s more in the present now. I’m doing a film about WikiLeaks. And that has certain cultural issues attached to it. I’m trying to disentangle that from the myth and the reality.

Question: Is Julian Assange working with you on this? Do you have his cooperation?

Alex Gibney: I would say it’s both. I went to him early on. This film is commissioned. I have complete editorial control and I went to him early on and said to him: I’m doing this whether you’re in or you’re out and I hope you’ll cooperate. Since then, we spent a lot of time on the phone and a lot of time in person. I went to his 40th birthday party.
