WikiLeaks movies, films, plays and books abound. From CNN’s ‘WikiWars’ to the theatrical production of Ron Elisha’s “Stainless Steel Rat,” the WikiLeaks and Julian Assange story is now being interpreted for the public on television, in cinemas and in theaters around the globe. Given that these interpretations have an impact on the public’s perception and understanding of this important story it is in the public’s vital interest to exchange direct, honest reviews to inform opinion.

In this spirit we are delighted to read and spread the word about the eloquent and humorous NOH8ER’s Blog Review of the new Julian Assange play that just debuted in Sydney, “Stainless Steel Rat”, written by Ron Elisha and directed by Wayne Harrison.

As NOH8ER notes, “I’ve been following the WikiLeaks story and that of Julian Assange reasonably closely since about January this year (2011) and I have at least the nuts and bolts of the matter down pat… I left Ron Elisha’s play Stainless Steel Rat with a foul taste in my mouth. The taste of the Arts equivalent of rat piss, but not of the stainless kind… just degrading cartoons set within the device of an extended porn shoot… Don’t see it, it’s shit.”

And then Wikileaks brought attention to this review on Twitter:

“Zero Grasp of the Issue or Respect for Anyone Involved…”

We feel it is important to highlight these Citizen Reviewers who allow us to receive alternate viewpoints which balance more “Professional” or “Insider” reviews which may or may not paint the full picture of the story. And painting the full picture, with a good dose of context, is extremely important when it comes to the making sense of the critical topic of WikiLeaks. Additionally, thoughtful reviews by the likes of NOH8ER have the opportunity and luxury of a “no constraints” approach. Thus there is more potential for refreshing viewpoints and if we’re lucky…an ounce of humor which clearly abounds in this particular review. The opportunities for “Edutainment” which sparks insight and gut level laughter abound. And as serious as the WikiLeaks story is in terms of the future of journalism and Democracy, it is critical that the proper level of amusement and laughter be slid into the mix. We hope you enjoy!

NOH8ER’S Review of “Stainless Steel Rat” | Play Written by Ron Elisha

I left Ron Elisha’s play Stainless Steel Rat with a foul taste in my mouth. The taste of the Arts equivalent of rat piss, but not of the stainless kind.

…what we saw on Tuesday night was two and a half hours, sans interval, of a rushed, opportunistic, sensationalist, parasitic ride on WikiLeaks’ hard-won fame with zero grasp of the issue or respect for ANYONE involved, just degrading cartoons set within the device of an extended porn shoot.

…In the announcement before the play began, it was said that “we wanted to get this on the stage as quickly as possible, before we got run over by WikiLeaks the Broadway Musical or something like that”, and this definitively opportunistic goal was certainly achieved.

…It is clear that nobody gains from this stinking jewel of misinformation, toxic parody and cynical caricature except the egos of those who “wanted to be first” to ride on WikiLeaks’ fame whilst at the same time poisoning the well.

…The foregoing should be tempered by reflecting on the actors, all of whom did a very good job with the material they were given. Valerie Bader’s rendition of Julia Gillard deserves particular note, as do the efforts of Daniel Weller, who played Julian Assange.

…A really good opportunity for a worthy piece of drama was not only missed, it was pissed on. Even the title, although related to Assange’s cypherpunk past, was taken verbatim from the title of the Harry Harrison book.

Don’t see it, it’s shit.
