Imagining New Oliver Stone Movies – “Born on the 3rd of July” and “The Patriot” – Remix Art on 40th Birthday of Julian Assange

Will Oliver Stone, who has publicly acknowledged the value of WikiLeaks, make a movie related to this organization and its founder Julian Assange? To coincide with the 40th birthday of Julian Assange, a network of inspired artists are now “imagining” such movies.

July 3rd 2011 marks the 40th birthday of Julian Assange, one day before the US Independence Day Federal holiday of July 4th. To mark this occasion Michael Parenti (@exiledsurfer) and artist Merlin Street have crafted provocative works of ReMix Art respectfully entitled “Born On The Third of July,” “The Patriot,” and “WikiHead”, each piece drawing attention to many of the same issues as WikiLeaks including: citizen revolutions, service to Democracy, conflicted activists, and the historical struggle of people for independence and freedom.

Each piece of art “Imagines” new movies directed by Oliver Stone. The art by Michael Parenti (@exiledsurfer) draws inspiration from the Oliver Stone movie Born on the Fourth of July (1989) which was based on the biography of Ron Kovic who “Paralyzed in the Vietnam war… becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist after feeling betrayed by the country he fought for.” The Patriot by Merlin Street is a remix of the original Roland Emmerich film which tells the story of a “Peaceful man who was driven to fight to protect freedom and independence during the American Revolution.”

About Julian Paul Assange (born July 3, 1971)

Julian Paul Assange is an Australian publisher, journalist, computer programmer and Internet activist. He is the editor in chief of WikiLeaks, a whistleblower website and conduit for worldwide news leaks, with the stated purpose of creating open governments. Assange was a hacker in his youth, before becoming a computer programmer. He has lived in several countries and has made public appearances in many parts of the world to speak about freedom of the press, censorship and investigative journalism.

Merlin describes his inspiration for this piece, “It is Independence Day here in the United States and talk of revolution is in the air, but this time it is against the Bankers and Multi-National Corporations and we need a new modern day revolutionary hero to lead us to victory. The quotation “We fight not to enslave, but to set a country free…” comes from Thomas Paine, a revolutionary author, radical, intellectual, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. And since many that follow Wikileaks wish that director Oliver Stone would make a film about Julian Assange, I think it is appropriate that he direct this remix.”
