Wikileaks Movie & Film Projects abound but it’s about time that a Wikileaks Play or “Wikiplay” is developed for Theatre Lovers. Thanks to @issylvia for sharing the news about this play called “Stainless Steel Rat” directed by Wayne Harrison and starring Sydney-based actor Darren Weller in the star role as Julian Assange.

The Wikiplay will open Sydney’s Seymour Centre the next month on June 30, 2011 and will be centered around the story of a movie and film director producing a film about Wikileaks and Julian Assange. Hilarious! One wonders whether the actual Wikileaks movie and film directors Alex Gibney, Charles Ferguson or Marc Shmuger will be interviewed?

Many global leaders in addition to Assange will be portrayed in this theatrical performance about Wikileaks. These characters and players include Australian PM Julia Gillard, United States President Barack Obama and Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev. No word on whether Pfc Bradley Manning, Daniel Domsheit Berg or many of the key star journalists or bloggers such as David Leigh or Greg Mitchell will be highlighted in this Wikileaks Play or “Wikiplay.”

Stainless Steel Rat, by award-winning Melbourne playwright Ron Elisha, is believed to be the first stage play in the world to tell Assange’s life story. It also depicts many key players in the WikiLeaks drama, including Prime Minister Julia Gillard, US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The Swedish women who accused Assange of sexual misconduct also appear as characters in the play, as does prominent lawyer Geoffrey Robertson and his wife Kathy Lette.

Harrison says the play is about a film director making a film of Assange’s life. ”She gathers all the key players and imagines their behind-the-scenes conversations. It’s satirical and certainly very amusing. You learn an awful lot about Julian’s background. All the characters must decide if they are going to be part of his grand adventure changing the world or if they will resist it and hang on to their old ways.

On a related note, Wikileaks has been the focus of DSI Comedy Theater in North Carolina, USA for some time now, with improv shows running throughout May. The last show is May 27, 2011.

The premise is simple. Our cast of comedians improvise scenes and characters inspired by the secrets our audiences share. They may be secrets revealed by people on stage the night of the show, on sheets of paper when they come in the door or secrets sent online.

This is an opportune moment for this Wikileaks Play which is based in Australia. It comes just as news reports detail the use of spying and Austrailian Intelligence Services for daily reporting on Wikileaks and Julian Assange:

The department of the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has revealed that WikiLeaks and its Australian founder, Julian Assange, were the subject of Australian intelligence reporting last year as the government anticipated the whistleblower website would spill “highly sensitive and politically embarrassing” Australian secrets.
